LAANC and UAS Facility Maps explained
Updated 2026-10-16. Independent guide, not affiliated with the FAA.
LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) gives near real-time ATC authorizations for Part 107 flights in controlled airspace, through FAA-approved apps.
- UAS Facility Maps divide controlled airspace into grids. Each grid shows the maximum altitude AGL that LAANC can approve (for example 0, 100, 200, 400).
- 0 means no automatic approval; apply in FAA DroneZone.
- Authorization altitudes are limits: you must not exceed them.
On the test, you will be asked whether authorization is required, which depends on reading the sectional (Class B, C, D, or E surface area).
